The City Council must decide between two dates for the citizens of El Cerrito to vote on the library measure. We're advocating that the library measure be on the June ballot.

Because February 19 is 103 days before June 2, 2026, California Election Code allows the City Council to choose between putting the tax measure on the June 2, 2026 ballot (at a cost of  $80,163) or the November 3, 2026 ballot (at no additional cost because there is already a City ouncil election that costs $80,163).  Both June 2, 2026, and November 3, 2026, have scheduled elections. The first is for numerous county offices and for primaries California offices such as Governor.

Here are the reasons to put it on the June 2, 2026 ballot.

The sooner the decision is made, the sooner:

• The City can enter into negotiations with BART and their developer Related California.
• The City can start tracking their Library related costs for reimbursement from the tax proceeds.
• Viable alternatives can be developed.
• The City can start a robust, public process to evaluate and select a modern library alternative.
• Construction will start and keep the construction costs down.
• Please email the City Council and encourage them to place this on the June 2, 2026 ballot!
• And if you can, attend the Special Meeting on February 19 to show your support or to advocate
  during public comment. There is no reason to delay.
